Sunshine Coast Surf Report,
Where Are The Best Waves?

I learnt the importance of The Sunshine Coast Surf Report to check conditions last Christmas when my oldest son got his first surfboard from Santa.

Then, I gave my husband a long board for Christmas last year and both boys got new boogie boards. So, our boards go everywhere.

Sunshine Coast Surf Report

With more than 100km of beautiful white beaches Sunshine Coast Australia has been described as one of the world’s top surf destinations, a must for anyone doing some surfing in Australia.

From Caloundra to Noosa there are over 50 different surf locations.

What to Expect:

  • While the Sunshine Coast rarely sees the giant swells, experienced further down the Coast, there are many point and beach breaks that provide high quality, well shaped waves
  • Beaches are easily accessible, largely un-crowded and waves to suit all experience levels, you don’t have to be a pro – just prepared to give it a go and remember, “practice makes perfect!”
Things You Need to Know:
  • If your travelling companion doesn’t surf there is plenty to keep them amused! Coffee and the Sunday paper on the beach with the promise of a nice cooked brekky does it for me!
  • Due to the Sunshine Coast Weather you can comfortably go surfing all year round, but the best time is December to May
  • There are some perfect spots for learning – do it yourself by building up your confidence slowly, in a few more gentle and consistent bays or there are plenty of Surf Schools around
  • A couple of good learning spots recommended to us are:
Happy Valley – in the heart of Caloundra, famous for its gentle long breaking waves. It even has a boardwalk where you can sit and watch all the action
Dicky Beach - northern side of Caloundra. Plenty of cafes nearby to buy a coffee.
Currimundi - a northern suburb of Caloundra, Fewer crowds, with a lake next to the open beach break. Like the Alley on the Gold Coast
  • No matter how experienced you are always observe beach safety guidelines as outlined by Surf Life Saving Australia
