The Blackall Range Queensland in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland stretches from Mooloolah and Palmwoods, through Montville, Maleny and Mapleton all the way to Kenilworth and Conondale.

It was the September school holidays so my sister in law, neice and my two boys headed off for a day on the ‘range’, Blackall Range Queensland. Our aim was to have an exciting, fun filled day, enjoying as much as possible on a budget. Here’s how we did it.Our Itinerary From Caloundra our first stop was Pioneer Park,Landborough. We can’t drive past this park without stopping. The kids love it. The Flying Fox and Climbing Net are the favourites. We continued on the Maleny Landsborough Road to our next stop, the Information Centre, located next to the giant Wine Barrel. A great place to get some local knowledge, grab a map and plan your day. With our day on Blackall Range Queensland all organised we headed up the road to Mary Cairncross Park. For a gold coin donation you can easily walk through the well maintained tracks and learn about the spectacular rainforest and spot some wildlife. The short track is 1.5km and the long track is 1.7km. We spotted some Pademelons (similar to wallabies) and Brush Turkeys on the way.

After our walk the kids played in the playground on the ‘spider’s web’ while I got takeaway coffees from the kiosk. We tucked into homemade scones with jam and cream and wonderful coffees for Morning Tea on a shady picnic table overlooking the playground and a large grassed area.

Before taking off we had a look at the breathtaking views from the kiosk over the Glasshouse Mountains. The kids got up ‘close and personal’ with the cows!

Next stop, Maleny Cheese. Unfortunately there wasn’t much happening in the factory when we were there except loads of people eating lunch (I hear it is pretty good) so we headed off through Maleny and followed the signs to Baroon Pocket Dam.

This was the perfect lunch stop for our individually designed lunches that we packed from home with a few treats. There was another playground for the kids to enjoy. Plenty of room for everyone, picnic tables, electric BBQs, a toilet, playground and boat ramp. It was very peaceful watching the Pelicans and Ducks and you can even do a walk around the dam if you feel energetic.Fully contented we were off to Maleny Dairies. The Hopper family are the third generation of farmers since 1948 to manage this 200 acre farm. During school holidays and weekends farm tours are held at 10.30am and 2.30pm, other times by appointment only. For $ 7 per person and under 2 years free, you can see where the cows and goats are milked, pat and feed the baby animals then take a look at the processing factory. The kids can play on the tractors and you get to enjoy a flavoured milk and yoghurt from their award winning range to finish. We were lucky enough to be there at milking time so this was a real treat. This tour lasted for approximately 1 hour and was definitely worth it, take a look for yourself.

To finish the day off in style we headed up the main street of Maleny to Colin James Fine Foods. We tried one of their award winning gelati, yummy.

We also had a sneak peak at their ‘cheese room’, and breathed in the fabulous coffee and little dutch pancakes – poffertjes, ah, next time!
What a fabulous way to spend a day on the Blackall Range Queensland.
