The Big Pineapple Is A National Icon But Is It One Of The Top Sunshine Coast Tourist Attractions?
No, not anymore, sadly The Big Pineapple has lost it’s spark! This Sunshine Coast Tourist Attraction was first opened in 1971. The Pineapple stands 16 metres high and is located on the Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, near Nambour. Today to preserve a little bit of history, consideration is being given to whether to make this attraction heritage listed.

In its prime, it was bustling with tourists, boasting nearly 1 million visitors per year. In 1983 Princess Diana even made a special visit. In its ‘hey day’ you could buy just about anything with a pineapple theme – money boxes, rubbers, purses and t-shirts. You could even get your films developed there on a one hour service and it was a very popular Wedding venue. Now, over half of the Plantation is not used and there is limited staff. You can still go up inside the fibreglass pineapple and learn about how pineapples are grown, take a plantation train tour, visit the Animal Nursery and shop and indulge in one of their famous ice cream sundaes. Entry is free and it is open from 9 am everyday except Christmas Day. If you are passing it is worth a pit stop for a photo and a sundae. Remember it is one of our National Icons.
The Big Pineapple may no longer be described as one of the top Sunshine Coast tourist attractions however there are plenty to choose from. Come and discover.
